Group 2 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Test for Sulphates
•add HCl and Barium Chloride(BaCl2)
•if sulphate is present, white precipitate will be formed which is Barium sulphate as it is insoluble
Solubility of group 2 sulphates
•Most soluble—>least soluble
•as you go down the group
Solubility of group 2 hydroxides
•Least soluble—> most soluble
•as you go down the group
Mg(OH)2 and BaS04 are
Precipitates or form precipitates as they are insoluble
Barium sulphate is used for
X-rays in medicine
Magnesium hydroxide is used for
Indigestion
Reaction of group 2 metals with water
•Produces metal hydroxide and Hydrogen
Example>
•Mg + 2H20 —> Mg(OH)2 + H2
Reaction of Magnesium with steam and observation
•Forms oxide and Hydrogen
•Mg + H20(g) —> MgO + H2
•Bright lights
Adding carbonate to acid forms? and observation
Co2/effervescence
Oxide + acid forms
Salt + Water
example> Mg0 + 2HCL —> MgCl2 + H20
