Group 2 Metals Flashcards
(11 cards)
Why as you go down group 2 do their hydroxides reactions become more vigorous
As there is more shielding hence the outer electron is further from the nucleus weaker attraction between the nucleus and the outer electrons so the electrons are lost more easily
As you go down the group what is seen between the reaction between group 2 metals and hydroxides
More vigorous fizzing
reactions warming up quicker
less precipitate formed
Reaction of magnesium and steam
Mg(s) + H2O(g) = MgO(s) + H2(g)
How does the reaction with Mg differ to the reaction with steam
Mg with water is a very slow reaction while My with steam is a very fast reaction
Trend of solubility and pH group 2 metal hydroxides as you go down the group
Increases solubility and pH increases
Reaction of MgCl2 and NaOH
MgCl2 + 2NaOH —> Mg(OH)2 + 2NaCl
Mg2+ + 2OH- —> Mg(OH)2
Trend of solubility in water of metal group 2 sulfates as you go down the group
Decrease in solubility
Test for sulfate ions
Add acidified Barium Chloride
white ppt formed
Why is acid used HCl or HNO3
To remove the carbonate which would interfere with the reaction
Test for barium ions
Sulfuric acid or any soluble sulfate salt
Uses of Mg and give equation
Used as a reducing agent to extract titanium from its ore
TiO2 + 2Cl2 +2C —> TiCl4 + 2CO
TiCl4 + 2Mg —> Ti + 2MgCl2
