Experiment for magnesium and calcium with water:

A
  1. Test tube half full of water, add the calcium (do NOT touch).
  2. Hold an empty test-tube over the first test tube, to collect any gas produced.
  3. After 1 min, test gas in top test tube with lighted splint. (Squeaky-pop test)
  4. Add 5 drops of UI into lower test tube.
  5. Repeat with magnesium, record results.
