Group Dynamics Flashcards
(6 cards)
What am I going to discuss?
How a transactional leadership style benefits group dynamics within the Mercedes F1 team AND how it fits into each stage of Tuckman’s model of group development.
Forming Phase
Setting clear expectations and a strong structure is essential here.
TUCKMAN emphasises that clarity helps teams function effectively from the start.
This means defining roles for each member -
from drivers to pit crew and clarifying how their performance will be judged and rewarded (Dong, 2023).
This structure gives everyone a sense of purpose and direction, essential for building a cohesive team.
Storming Phase
Transactional Leadership focuses on conflict resolution and creating fair, structured relationships.
Jones and Wallace (2005) keep highlight that clarity and structure to reduce tension and increase cooperation.
For Mercedes this means the competitive drive within the team by recognising each individual and team’s performance (Dong).
This way, team members feel valued and stay focused on collective goals.
Norming Phase
Here the leader manages performance against targets and builds stronger relationships.
Weingart 1997 expresses that communication and trust are crucial for team cohesion.
For Mercedes creating an environment for open feedback and trust helps everyone stay focused on their roles, which is vital for preparing for race day.
Performing Phase
Keep members motivated through monitoring progress and giving feedback and rewarding success.
Fletcher and Arnold (2017) In high pressure settings, performance management is key.
Mercedes can do this by tracking real time performance and providing immediate feedback to ensure the team stays resilient.
Adjourning Phase
Celebrating success and reflecting on performance.
Burke et al suggest that reviewing both successes and challenges is vital for future growth.
For Mercedes, this means recognising accomplishments and reflecting on record lap times for example
Which boosts morale and prepares them for the next season
