12- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) sent Abu Musa and Mu‘adh ibn Jabal to Yaman, and he sent each of them to govern a part. Then he said: ‘Be gentle and do not be hard, and cause rejoicing and do not alienate.’

-the responsibility of Muslim rulers
-devote time to the prosperity of their people
-be kind, gentle and just to win people’s trust
-cooperate with people (not dictatorship) and be kind
-impart religious instruction gently so they are inclined towards the faith

-rulers must remember that Allah has absolute authority and their governance is a trust from Allah
-governments should be fair kind and tolerant (Islamic principles) in all dealings, especially when giving religious knowledge
-a man once complained to the Prophet(SAW) that Muadh ibn Jabal recited surahs that were too long and he was tired after his job (physical labor). The prophet asked Muadh to shorten the surahs and said
+“O Muadh you are putting the people to trials”

13- He who studies the Qur’an is like the owner of tethered camels. If he attends to them he will keep hold of them, but if he lets them loose they will go away.

-the importance of reading and understanding the Quran
-Quran is the primary source of Islamic law and must not be neglected
-Muslims should have a strong relationship with the Quran by understanding & implementing it in their lives
-Quran keeps Muslims from going astray like the string on a camel
-Prophet(SAW) said
+“keep on reciting the Quran, for by him whose life mu hand is in, the Quran away faster than the camels that released from their tying ropes”

-Muslims must recite/read the Quran every day to stay on the right path
-brings blessings in daily life & closeness to Allah
-Prophet(SAW) used to encourage Muslims to learn & teach Quran
-Tarawih prays (in Ramadan) for Quran recitation
+“Allah does not listen so attentively, as he listens to the recitation of the Holy Quran”

14- May God show mercy to a man who is kindly when he sells, when he buys, and when he demands his money back.

-manners of conduct during business transactions
-act kindly in all manners of life (and financial dealings)
-honesty, fairness & kindness are the guiding principles of any business transaction
+(Quran on trade)”Give full measure when you measure and weigh with a balance that is straight”
-mercy to others is rewarded by Allah, Prophet(SAW) liked those who were sympathetic to the borrower

-being fair and honest during all dealings
-showing respite to the debtor when asking for money back
-not keeping unfair margins of profit
-legitimate business
-Prophet(SAW) was honest and truthful. would not hide defects while trading
-trade in syria was done with such prudence & duty that he got more profit and khadija proposed to him due to his character
-Usman would give more in measuring of weights and pay more as Allah had provided him with more than he needed for himself

15- God will not show mercy to him who does not show mercy to others.

A

a)
Rahman & Raheem (merciful & beneficient) are one of Allah’s most quoted attributes (forgiving Adam)
-Muslims must also develop kindness and show compassion to others
-overlook minor faults
+prophet(SAW) “he who is devoid of mercy is devoid of all good”
-A Muslim treatment by Allah depends on his treatment of others
-those who deprive others of mercy deprive themselves of Allah’s mercy

-doing small acts of kindness (give eg)
-forgiving other’s mistakes
-brotherhood
-Prophet(SAW) forgave his enemies (Taif,Makkah)
-sunnah shows forgiveness

16- The believers are like a single man; if his eye is affected he is affected, and if his head is affected he is all affected

-Concept of community and brotherhood
-Muslims are united under Islam (universal brotherhood of all Muslims)
-Muslims must make peace between themselves (even if there is a dispute)
+“hold fast by the rope of Allah all together and not be divided”
-Muslims’ blood property and honor are sacred
-support one another

-aware of the sufferings of others & try to help them

17- Modesty produces nothing but good

A

a)
-of body & mind
-modesty makes a morally pious & respectful society
-believer considered themself part of the greater community rather than simply thinking about themselves
-peaceful community & not being involved in illegal and unjust acts
-modesty makes you ashamed when you do wrong (people without modesty are not affected by others’ reactions)
-encourages us to be kind and generous morally & materially
+“modesty and faith are companions, when one of them is absent the other follows it”

-Distinctive quality of Islam is modesty
-taking moderate path (humble and simple)
-Prophet(SAW) was modest and shy (never spoke loudly or rudely)
-eliminates social problems as you are concerned for others
-shields against immorality (lowering gaze for the opposite sex)

18- He who has in his heart as much faith as a grain of mustard seed will not enter hell and he who has in his heart as much pride as a grain of mustard seed will not enter paradise

a)
-faith takes away Allah’s wrath & is the requirement of salvation
-develops humility and obedience to Allah
-Pride & arrogance is the worst attribute of man as it means rejecting the truth and looking down on others (linked to Iblis)
-Anyone Allah has blessed with good qualities should remain thankful to Allah
+Prophet(SAW) said, “Allah the highest says, pride is my cloak and greatness My robe, and who competes with me in respect of either, I shall cast him into hellfire”
b)
-Muslims should avoid arrogance and stay steadfast in the faith
-actively resist pride
-Prophet(SAW) remained humble despite becoming the leader of Madina & conquering Makkah etc
-Iblis was thrown from heaven for his pride
+” he refused to obey and was arrogant. He was of those who reject”
-make sure there is no place in their hearts or minds for pride no matter how much success they receive in this world

19- The world is the believer’s prison and the unbeliever’s paradise

A

a)
-This world has many rules & restrictions imposed by Islam
-disbelievers may be granted all they desire in this world but may get nothing in the afterlife (compensated for their good deeds by having a good worldly life)
-on the other hand, believers may not be granted much in this world but even at the lowest level of paradise they will get all that their heart desires
-believer does not see this world as their home like a prisoner does not see the prison as home
+“the world is a cultivating ground for the hereafter”
-trials and tribulations
b)
-following Allah’s path & being mindful of distractions
-Prophet(SAW) was offered great wealth, marriage to the most beautiful woman, and the Quraish were even offering to practice his faith if they practiced theirs however he refused and continued on the path of Tauheed
-being honest and rejecting all bribes & temptations
-the aim of life should not be worldly possessions rather striving for paradise
+“Live in this world as if you were a stranger or a wayfarer”

20- God does not look at your forms and your possessions, but he looks at your hearts and your deeds.

A

a)
-worldly status is disregarded & the only connection is righteousness
-A true believer is never proud of possessions, beauty, children
-being righteous and having taqwa is also a blessing from Allah
-all acts without sincerity are meaningless & hidden intentions will be judged as well as outward deeds
+“every action is based on the intention behind it and everyone shall have what he intended”
b)
-purity of heart and good intentions must be the basis of every action a Muslim takes (charity is given by intention not to show off)
-Hazrat Bilal was a muezzin because of his strong faith and love of Islam
-Muslims must be sincere and not engage in false praise or flattery of others to benefit themselves
