Haemopoiesis Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is haemopoiesis
The formation of blood cells
Function of neutrophils?
Phagocytosis/acute inflammation
Function of eosinophils?
Destroy parasites
Modulate hypersensitivity reaction
Function of basophils?
Modulate hypersensitivity reactions
Function of monocytes/macrophages?
Modulate immune reactions
Phagocytic clearance
Regulatory functions
Function of lymphocytes?
B cells- humoral antibodies
T cells- Regulation and cell mediated immunity
NK cells- Anti viral/tumour
Life span of Neutrophils?
7-8 hours
Life span of platelets?
7-10 days
What is a platelet precursor cell?
Megakaryocyte
What is meant by self renewal in haemopoiesis?
A property of stem cells, not present in descendents
Which embryological layer are haemopoietic stem cells derived from?
Mesoderm
What is the endosteum
The interface between bone and bone marrow
What is the difference between red and yellow marrow?
Red is haemopoietically active whereas yellow is fatty and inactive
What regulates haemopoiesis?
Complex interplay of intrinsic properties of cells (in particular stem cells)
Transcription factors
What factor regulates neutrophil maturation?
Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)
What factor regulates development of megakaryocytes?
Thrombopoietin
How are mature cells investigated?
FBC/morphological assessment
How are precursor cells investigated
Immunophenotyping
Cytochemistry
Clonogenic assays
Animal models
What is immunophenotyping?
Using antibodies to identify patterns of antigen expression to identify a cell type
