Halides Flashcards
(16 cards)
Reactions with sulfuric acid of group 1 halides form…
Hydrogen halides, depends in halide.
What’s the product of the reaction of KF or KCl with sulfuric acid? Observations?
Hydrogen fluoride or hydrogen chloride gas. Q
Misty fumes as gas encounters air.
Why does the reaction of KF or KCl + sulfuric acid stop?
Fluoride and chloride ions not sting enough to reduce sulfuric acid.
Why is reaction of KF or KCl + sulfuric acid not a redox reaction?
Oxidation numbers os halide and sulfur stay the same.
Projects of first reaction of KBr + H2SO4? Observations?
Misty fumes.
Hydrogen bromide gas.
Why does reaction of KBr + H2SO4 have a second reaction?
Bromide ions stronger reducing agent than chloride ions react with H2SO4 in redox reaction.
What products (with observations) are produced in 2nd reaction of KBr + H2SO4?
Choking fumes sulphur dioxide (SO2)
Orange fumes bromine (Br2)
Why does reaction of KI + H2SO4 react multiple times?
It’s a very good reducing agent and keeps reducing until the products SO2 and H2S form.
What os the product formed in the initial reaction of KI + H2SO4?
Hydrogen iodide gas (HI)
Colour of F- when reacted with silver ions?
No precipitate (AgF is insoluable)
Silver ions + Cl- colour?
White precipitate
Silver ions + Br- colour?
Cream precipitate
Silver ions + I- colour?
Yellow precipitate
Observation of AgCl?
Precipitate dissolves in dilute ammonia
Colourless solution.
Observations AgBr?
Precipitate unchanged if dilute ammonia solution added
Dissolve concentrated ammonia solution Hve colubrids solution y m
Observations AgI?
Precipitate not dissolved, even in concentrated ammonia solution
