  • Laertes is devastated.

  • Ophelia commits suicide and Laertes returns and plans his revenge with the king.

  • Hamlet tells Horatio he knows of his uncle’s plans to assassinate him on his trip to England.
  • Hamlet is invited to the duel.
  • Before the duel, Claudius puts a poison pearl into his cup and offers it to Hamlet. Gertrude drinks the wine from the poison cup —> her death.
  • Both men swap swords during the fight, both are wounded with the deadly poison —> Laertes dies (but he and Hamlet forgive each other).
  • Hamlet forces Claudius to drink the poison.
  • Hamlet asks Horatio to tell his story to others.
  • Fortinbras enters with his army, celebrating the fact that they have claimed the land in Poland. Moved by his story, Fortinbras orders a soldier’s burial for the dead prince.
