Hand vessels and nerves Flashcards
(26 cards)
arteries of the hand
- radial
2. ulnar
superficial palmar arterial arch
- ulnar artery = major contributor
- central compartment bt palmar aponeurosis and and long digital flexor tendons
- larger and more distal
deep palmar arterial arch
- radial artery= major contributor
- located within adductor- innterosseous compartment on surface of metacarpal bones deep to long flexor tendons and adductor pollicis
Radial artery
- gains dorsum of hand at anatomical snuff box
- passes between heads of 1st dorsal interosseous muscle
- crosses medially btw adductor pollicis heads
- anastomose with deep branch of ulnar artery to form deep palmar arterial arch
Branches of radial artery
- superficial palmar
- dorsal carpal
- princeps pollicis
- radialis indicis
superficial palmar branch of radial artery
- arises before artery goes to back of hand
- crosses thenar muscles
- passes superficial to digital flexor tendons
- anastomose with ulnar artery
dorsal carpal branch of radial artery
- arises near anatomical snuff box
- deep to extensor tendons
- forms dorsal carpal arch by anastomosing with like branch on ulnar
- 3 dorsal metacarpal arteries branch from dorsal arch
- go to fingers to form dorsal digital arteries
- *1st dorsal metalcarpal- radial artery
- **5th dorsal metacarpal- ulnar artery
Princeps pollicis
- arises from radial artery
- ascends to ulnar side of thumb
- divides into 2 branches
- distributes to palmar surface of thumb
radialis indicis
- arises with princeps pollicis from radial artery
- supplies palmar side of index finger
Branches from deep palmar arch
- palmar metacarpal arteries
- 3 arteries
- 2, 3, 4 metacarpsl
- anastomose with common palmar digital arteries from superficial branch - perforating arteries
- connects dorsal metacarpal arteries with palmar metacarpal arteries
Ulnar Artery
- crosses wrist lateral to pisiform and superficial to flexor retinaculum
- accompanies ulnar nerve
- deep palmar branch to anastomose with deep palmar arch
- forms superficial palmar arch and anastomose with superficial palmar branch from radial artery
Branches of superficial palamar arch
- common palmar digital arteries
- 3 arteries
- course on surface of long flexor tendons
- anastomose with palmar metacarpal arteries of deep arch
Proper digital arteries
- 2 to each finger
- formed of of short trunk of anastomoses with palamr metacarpal arteries from deep arch and common palmar digital arteries from superficial trunk
- 4 arteries supplied to each finger
Median Nerve
- enters hand through carpal tunnel
- deep to palmar aponeurosis
- central compartment
- radial side of palmaris longs tendon
Branches of medial nerve at hand
- recurrent (motor) branch
- common palmar digital nerve
- palmar cutaneous branch
Reccurent (motor) branches of median nerve
- arises directly from median nerve
- innervates thenar compartment
Common palmar digital nerve branches of median nerve
- 3 nerves
- supply cutaneous innervation to thumb, 2nd, 3rd, and radial side of 4th digit via proper digital branches
palmar cutaneous branch of median nerve
- proximal to flexor retinaculum
- descend superficial to flexor retinaculum
- innervates central palm
Ulnar nerve
- enters hand with ulnar artery
- divides into superficial and deep branches
- also
- cutaneous palmar branch that started in forearm
- dorsal cutaneous branch
superficial branch of ulnar nerve
- provides common and proper digital branches to 5th and ulnar side of 4th digit
- commentating branch between 3rd and 4th digit ulnar and median nerve
Deep branch of ulnar nerve
- follow deep ulnar branch of artery (superficial to deep palmar arterial arch)
- innervates
1. hypothenar muscles
2, lumbricals 3 and 4
3. all interossei
4. adductor pollicis
cutaneous palmar branch of ulnar nerve
- arises in forearm
- enters central palm
- innervates with cutaneous branch of medial nerve
Dorsal cutaneous branch of ulnar nerve
- passes dorsally near styloid process
- divides into 3 dorsal digital nerve
- innervates skin on medial dorsum of hand, ulnar side 4th digit and entire 5th digit
superficial branch of radial nerve
- hand is limited to superficial radial nerve
- has 2 branches:
1. lateral branch
2. medial branch
