What is hardwood

A

hard wood drops leaves cnnually, not sustainable - lakes around loo yous to gran, transporting releases alot of Cā€™2 and deforestation /habitat loss longer in girth and heght, generally have more attrachive grain struchurer texture and colours. Greater durability than soft wood, grown in europe, now zeland, chile and tropical parts of south america

Oak

A

Properties - very strong/durable, heavy and hard timber which responds well to steam bending, glues/stains/ finishes well, most hand + machne tools produce good results, golden brown in colour with highly figured gran.
Costs - expensive
uses - high qualily indoor furnture, garden finnture,whiskey barrels, floor

Beech

A

Properties - heavy, very strong but prone to warping. Difficult to work with hand tools, machine + turns well
beech responds well to steambending, glues / finishes well, not sustainable for outdoor use - not durable when exposed to moisture change -, very light pinkish brown colour with even grain.

costs - quite expensive

uses - childrens toys, wooden spoons, chairs, work benches, flooring,
plywood, turned objects such as rolling pins

Mahogany

A

Properties - reasonably durable, strang material, glues / finishes well, easy to work wilh both hand and machine tools, colour can vary.
from pink to reddish brown
costs - expensive
uses - banisters, qualty indoor furniture , window frames, door frames, boat filtings (interiour trims)
