Name the role of the CPU
Interprets and carries out the basic instructions that operate the computer.
Name the role of ROM
ROM (Read only memory) contains permanent data and instructions that cannot be erased or edited. It is non-volatile, so contents are not lost when power is removed.
Name the role of Buses
Buses allow various devices inside and attached to the system unit to communicate with each other.
A computer stores data in a series of electronic bits. These bits travel internally within the circuitry of the computer along electrical channels called buses.
Name the role of Registers
The CPU contains high-speed storage locations, called registers, which temporarily hold data and instructions. A CPU has many different types of registers each with a specific function. These functions include storing the location from which the data was fetched, storing an instruction while the control unit decodes it, storing data while the AUL processes it, and storing the results of a calculation.
For desktop computers, a printer, and a scanner to be connected in a small office, what is most appropriate to use?
Wireless
What is a network
A collection of computers and devices connected by communication channels that facilitated communication between users and allows for data sharing and resources
Advantages of Networks
Sharing of data + information / Allows communcation between devices / Sharing of hardware and software
Disadvantages of Networks
Data + info can be intercepted / Unauthorised control over hardware and software
What is LAN
Local area network, connects two or more devices in the same geographical location / can connect without internet / LAN often has connection to the internet using a router
What is WAN
Wide area network, connects two or more devices in a large geographical location ( more than 2km ) / Can connect two LAN together eg. diff offices in diff cities
What is a peer-to-peer network?
All deviced are equal and store snd share data / easier and less expensive, however provides less security / can include printers, computers and other smart devices / typically in households
What does a client server do?
Clients can request data from central file servers for access to different parts of the network/servers eg. a print server
What is a wired network and its advantages and disadvantages?
Connected with physical cables
adv: faster data transfer, better security and a more reliable connection
disadv: lack of mobility, installation requirements, needs to be maintained
What is a mobile network?
Cellular network, uses telecommunication networks to allow communication with mobile devices / Phone tower coverage overlaps allows users to roam
What is the internet?
Allows connection between devices. / Network formed by smart devices that have an ‘on-off’ switch with the internet
Name the order of network hardware
Computer > NIC or wireless adapter > Switch > Modem > Router > Network
Tape
Higher capacity, slower storage and easily damageable
Hard Drive
A fast secondary storage which Is generally attached directly to the motherboard
Heat sink
Provide heat transfer away from components on the motherboard
