harlow - monkeys Flashcards
(8 cards)
what did harlow immediately do with monkeys
immediately he seperated monkeys from their mothers right after birth to be placed in cages with surrogate mothers
what were the surrogate mothers
one made of wire offering milk through an attached baby bottle
one made of terrycloth with no food
who were the monkeys drawn to and why
they were drawn to the cloth mother because it provided comfort and stayed with it, they only went to the wire mother for food when they were hungry
what would the monkeys do when met with a terrifying object
when a frightening object was placed in a cage the monkeys would take refuge with the cloth mother for comfort as it was their safe base
what was the cloth mother effective for
it was effective in reducing the the young monkeys fears making them explore more when it was present
how does it support the evolutionary theory of attachment
that the sensitive response and security of the caregiver is important rather than the provision of food. contact comfort is more important than food(cupboard love)
what did it conclude
- argues against idea of cupboard love
- effects of attachment are long lasting
what did harlow conclude in a follow up study
he compared monkeys raised by surrogate mothers to monkeys raised by normal mothers. he observed surrogate monkeys were much more timid and didnt know how to act with other monkeys. those raised with wire only were also inadquate mothers. suggests effects of poor attachment are long lasting
