harmonics Flashcards
(5 cards)
what do the formation of harmonics depend on?
the frequency of the vibration and the situation in which they are created
These harmonics can be observed on a string with two fixed ends
As the frequency is increased, more harmonics begin to appear
define the term the first harmonic
this is when a stationary wave is vibrating at its lowest possible resonant frequency and the simplest wave pattern is a single loop made up of two nodes and an antinode . one half wavelength
what are resonant frequencies dependent on?
length of string L and the wavespeed v
what is the equation used to calculate the frequency of the first harmonic
f1 = v/lambda = v/2L
the wavelength is double the length of the string
describe what is meant by the second harmonic
3 nodes and 2 antinodes
twice the frequency of the first harmonic. there are two loops with a node in the middle and one at each end. two half wavelengths fit on the string
wavelength is the length of the string
