Tonic
The first note (or chord) of a key; the “home” note or chord
Dominant
The fifth note of the scale; often leads back to the tonic and creates tension
Subdominant
The fourth note of the Cale; often moves to the dominant
Cadence
A sequence of chords that ends a phrase or piece of music
Perfect cadence
Chords V-I; sounds final and complete
Imperfect Cadence
Ends on chord V; sounds unfinished
Plagal cadence
Chords IV-I
Interrupted cadence
Chords V-VI; an unexpected ending - sounds surprising or “interrupted”
Consonance
Notes or chords that sound pleasant or stable together
Dissonance
Clashing or unstable sounds that create tension
Modulation
A change of key within a piece
Major key
Generally sounds happy or bright
Minor key
Generally sounds sad, dark, or serious
Atonal
Music with no key; sounds unpredictable or dissonant
