Chapter 1
The village wakes to the unsettling sight of two fires: one from a new, unauthorized shack erected on the edge of the village land, and another from Master Kent’s dovecote
Chapter 2
Master Kent decrees that the old man and young man will both spend one week in the pillory for stealing the birds. Their bows will be snapped, and all three will have their heads shaven. It’s a comparatively lenient punishment, but the woman spits on the ground in front of Master Kent.
Chapter 3
Master Kent asks Walter to find Mistress Beldam and bring her to the barn, where she can find some shelter away from “danger.”
Chapter 4
Thirsk walks with Quill around the village and they also chose the Gleaning Queen. Kent mentions the changes that will come to the villages: sheep
Chapter 5
Jordan arrives in the village. The man in the pillory had died and pigs have eaten half of his leg - not what Jordan expected. Thirsk mad at himself for not helping
Chapter 6
Thirsk and Kitty Gosse share her bed and the evening together. Thirsk more focused on Jordan’s words in Manor House he said before
Chapter 7
Villagers wake to fine Willowjack has been murdered. Not sure who killed her. Master Jordan gathers everyone into the barn and doesn’t allow anyone to leave
Chapter 8
Thirsk works more with Quill and imagines working somewhere else when the sheep come. - calf skin+map making
Chapter 9
Jordan takes Kitty Gosse, Lizzie Carr and Anne Rogers to the Manor House. Brooker Higgs and the Derby twins have left the village
Chapter 10
John Carr and Thirsk finally talk and discuss what the villagers have been saying. They believe that Thirsk is conspiring with Quill and there is talk of witchcraft. John suggests that Thirsks leaves
Chapter 11
Learn that Jordan’s men have been torturing the 3 women. Groom prowls around the village and his remark to Lizzie’s father causes villagers to attack him
Chapter 12
Villagers have left the village + Jordan is happy about this. Jordan and Thirsk talk about the village and the income of sheep. Thirsk asks about Quill but no answer is given.
Chapter 13
Jordan, his men and the 3 women prepare to leave the village. Thirsk says his final goodbyes to Kent in an embrace: left ambiguous and to reader’s interpretation.
Watches them all leave the village from the high point of a hill
Chapter 14
Only 4 people left in village: Thirsk, Beldams and Quill. Thirsk has a nightmare about Quill and how he could potentially have been killed. He spends the night in the Manor House to sleep
Chapter 15
Storm subsides and Thirsk walks about the village. He finds Kitty Gosse’s ale and becomes really drunk. Imagination runs wild of people in his life. He wakes with a very bad hangover and realises the Beldams spent the night in the Manor House
Chapter 16
Thirsk believes the Beldams packed his things for him to leave. He walks through the Manor House and imagines the Beldams staying there, waiting for him with the food that has been prepared but when he gets there, the place has been deserted and damaged. - things taken. Finds Quill’s body and sees village burning
Chapter 17
Thirsk leaves the village. Hits his head on the boundary rock like all villagers did to children, the wheat he planted growing slightly in the field. The Manor House is burning down as he looks back
