  • The freedoms rides were a series of rides around Australia.
  • A group of students from the university of Sydney who drew National and international attention to the living conditions of Aboriginal people.
  • Led by Charlie Perkins
  • The Freedom rides opposed ban against Aboriginal service men at the Walgett RSL and laws barring aboriginal children from Moree swimming pools.

A

In 1835, it was used as a phrase to justify dispossession, dispersal and inhuman treatment of aboriginals. Literally means land belonging to no one.

What was protectors aborigines?

A

-From 1869-1911 -
-It was used to remove aboriginal children from their mothers.
-Recommend by the British government to manage the interest of aboriginals. Didn’t happen.
-Protection act of 1901 gave them control over indigenous Australians lives. The legal guardians of all aboriginal kids led to children taken away from their mothers.
-the stolen generation.

What was the aborigines welfare board?

A

In 1940 when protectors aborigines lost power the aborigines welfare board was given the power to remove children from their mothers. They also dictated how aboriginals live their lives. Such as marriage. Similar to protectors aborigines.

A

What important event happened in 1967?

A

There was a referendum to include aboriginal people in the census. And the commonwealth to make laws for regarding all races. However these laws never stated whether such laws should be fair. And the referendum failed to guarantee equality. Australians voted Yes to including aboriginals in the census not fauna.

What happened in 1992?

A

There was an Eddie Mabo vs Queensland case for the existence native title. Case that Australia was never terra nullius or empty land. This was overturned by the High Court. Paul Keating also acknowledges wrong doings.

Who was Paul Keating

A

Australian prime minister from 1991-1996. Keating acknowledged the wrong doings against aboriginals in the Redfern address in December 1992. The Redfern address demonstrated a step towards reconciliation. Being the first prime minister to do so.

What happened in 2008?

A

The prime minster at the time Kevin Rudd issued a formal apology to the stolen generations. The first prime minster to actually do so. Was a huge step towards reconciliation.

What happened in 1997?

A

The Bringing Them Home report. The report was a tribute to the strength and struggles of many thousands of aboriginal and Torres trait islander people affected by forced removal. It acknowledged the hardships they endured as well as remembering all the children who didn’t come home.
