how does Pliny set the scene in extract 1?
by using the pair of words, ‘infamis et pestilens’ which means ‘haunted’ and ‘bad reputation’ to create a spooky atmosphere
why does Pliny set the story in Athens in extract 1?
because it is an unfamiliar place for the romans and therefore creates an element of mystery
how does Pliny describe the house in Athens and why in extract 1?
‘spatiosa et capax’, large and roomy, this puts the reader on edge as there is lots of room for something to move around undetected
how does Pliny use sound to scare the reader in extract 1?
he says: ‘per silentium noctis sonus ferri’ which means ‘through the silence of the night was heard the sound of iron’- this scares the reader as they do not yet know where the sound is coming from
