HCA Module 09 - Support in Challenging Times Flashcards

1
Q

What is a crisis?

A

Working with individuals, youth and families experiencing behavioral health challenges can be difficult at the best of times. This work becomes even more challenging when the people with whom we work are having their hardest times.

These times are often called “crisis.” Crisis can be different things for different people or families.

Q

What one of the most important things to know about people in crisis?

A

One of the most important things to know about people in crisis is finding out what’s going on that may be causing the crisis.

For most people, crisis does not arise from thin air. It’s typically related to life stressors, long-term chronic disability, feelings of hopelessness and despair, and an inability to get some relief from the problems we face. Unless we discover the root cause of the crisis, we cannot help the person resolve it.

Q

What is WRAP?

A

Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) is a well-known worldwide self-help tool created by Mary Ellen Copeland.

WRAP was originally designed for mental health peers but is now used for all behavioral health peers as well as people facing different challenges.

You need specialized WRAP training to teach WRAP classes, and this education is very worthwhile. The classes teach many components of wellness and recovery and is very comprehensive.

WRAP begins by promoting 5 key concepts of recovery. They are:
* Hope
* Personal Responsibility
* Education
* Self-Advocacy
* Support
