hds definitons Flashcards
(34 cards)
A heat exchanger that uses a circulating refrigerant stream to condense or partially condense a vapor stream into a liquid. At the HDS Complex, they condense LPG from a treated fuel gas stream.
Chiller
A heat exchanger that uses a cooling medium stream to condense or partially condense a vapor stream into a liquid.
Condenser
A heat exchanger that uses a cooling medium stream to reduce the temperature of a process stream.
Cooler
A piece of equipment that mixes Boiler Feed Water (BFW) with superheated steam to saturate the steam and lower its temperature.
Desuperheater
A heat exchanger that uses a fan to blow ambient air across a finned tube- sheet containing a process stream.
Fin Fan Cooler
A fuel gas or natural gas-fired furnace that uses forced or natural draft ambuent air to generate a combustion reaction that heats, vaporizes, or partially vaporizes a process stream.
Heater/Furnace
A piece of equipment used to provided heat transfer from one process stream to another.
Heat Exchanger
A heat exchanger used to heat, vaporize, or partially vaporize a liquid stream from a distillation column.
Reboiler
A vessel that uses a heat medium and boiler feed water to produce steam and regulate steam pressure.
Steam Generator
A vessel in which two or more materials are contacted in the presence of a stationary catalyst bed, allowing a chemical reaction to occur.
Fixed-bed Reactor
A vessel in which two or more materials are contacted in the presence of a catalyst, allowing a chemical reaction to take place.
Reactor
A machine that converts electrical energy to mechanical rotary motion to drive a pump, compressor, or other process equipment.
Electric Motor
A device that uses steam energy to create a lower pressure (vacuum) on a process system.
Start-up Eductor
A machine that uses centrifugal force to accelerate a gas and convert the energy to pressure.
Centrifugal Compressor
A machine that increases the pressure of a liquid through the use of centrifugal force.
Centrifugal Pump
A machine that transfers gases from a lower pressure area to a higher pressure area.
Compressor
A machine that increases the velocity of a gas through the conversion of mechanical rotary motion.
Fan
A machine that moves air to a heater or boiler by creating pressure through the conversion of mechanical rotary motion to centrifugal force.
Forced-draft Fan
A device that adds energy to a liquid for the purpose of moving that liquid.
Pump
A machine that increases the pressure of a gas by trapping and compressing specific amounts of the gas between a piston and cylinder wall.
Reciprocating Compressor
A machine that increases the pressure of a liquid by the back-and-forth action of a piston, plunger, or diaphragm to physically displace the liquid.
Reciprocating Pump
A vessel in which process chemicals come in contact with amine (lean amine) in a concurrent flow to remove hydrogen sulfide (H2S). At the HDS Heavy Complex, these are used to clean yp hydrogen or other sour gas streams.
Amine Contactor
A vessel in which process streams are mixed with a caustic stream to remove mercaptan sulfur compounds and acid gases (H2S and CO2). At the HDS Light Complex, this is used to clean up a sour gas stream.
Caustic Contactor
A vertical vessel that separates the components of a feed stream according to the different boiling points of the components.
