what is the health belief model
psychological model which explains why people do or do not engage in healthy behaviours.
health belief model
cost benefit analysis
benefits
-in order to start using condoms during sex, the person must believe this action will bring them benefits. the main benefit is that a condom is an effective way of protecting themselves.
health belief model
cost benefit analysis
barriers
perceived barriers may be the inconvenience of using a condom during sex, belief that they reduce pleasure.
health belief model
perceived susceptibility
someone having unprotected sex has to believe tha6 they are personally and realistically venerable to the illness or disease that condoms protect against.
health belief model
perceived seriousness
whether a person changes their behaviour or not depending on how server they they think the consequences will be f they do not change.
eval of the health belief model
+ developing practical interventions to change health related behaviours
+it was developed by health researchers and practitioners
- the model is based on the assumption that people make rational decisions about their health behaviours
locus of control
the sense we each have about what directs events in our lives.
what is internal locus of control
Julian Rotter (1966) proposed that some people believe the things that happen to them are largely under their own control. people believe they are in control that they are mostly responsible for what happens to them.
what is external locus of control
Rotter (1966) a persons belief that it is mainly a matter of luck or the influence of other people what happens to them.
eval of locus of control
+the link between the locus of control and health is useful.
+there is evidence support that locus of control influences some health related behaviours in students
-the role of the locus of control in health may be exaggerated.
what is the transtheoretical model
the 5 stages which a person goes through to change their behaviour
