hearing and equilibrium Flashcards
(16 cards)
external ear
sounds wves travel via external auditory canal –> tympanic membrane –> cause vibrations
Where are ceruminous glands and what do they produce
@ external auditory canal
secrete ear wax
Where is middle ear
within temporal bone
4 parts of middle ear
1) ossicles
2) tympanic cavity
3) round & oval windows
4) eustachian tubes
Ossicles function
- Transmit sound waves to receptors @ inner ear
- Small bones located in middle ear
Tympanic Cavity
Chamber in the temporal bone
Round and Oval Windows
Areas at whihc the middle ear conencts to the inner ear
Eustachian Tubes
Connect middle ear to nasopharynx
Parts of Ossicles
1) Malleus (hammer)- most alteral & attached to tympanic membrane
2) Incus (anvil)
3) Stapes (stirrup)- smallest bone
Inner Ear
1) Vestibular Apparatus (balance/equilibrium)
2) Cochlea (hearing)
Vestibular Apparatus
1) semicircular canal (ROTATIONAL movement)
2) Uticle & Saccule (POSITIONAL movement)
Cochlea
1) Vestibular Duct
2) Tympanic Duct
3) Cochlear Duct
Both the cochlea and the vestibular apparatus are structured as two channels in the bone, called
the membranous and bony labyrinths
membranous labyrinth is within bony
The membrane labyrinth is filled with
endolymph fluid
The bony labyrinth is filled with
perilymph fluid
