Heart Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is the function of the heart?
Acts as a pump to circulate blood around the body.
What type of muscle makes up the heart?
Cardiac muscle.
What do the atria do?
Contract to push blood into the ventricles.
What is the function of the right ventricle?
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
What is the function of the left ventricle?
Pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.
Why are coronary arteries important?
Supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients.
What is the septum’s function?
Separates left and right sides of the heart to prevent mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
What does the vena cava do?
Brings deoxygenated blood from the body to the right atrium.
What does the pulmonary artery do?
Carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs.
What does the pulmonary vein do?
Brings oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
What does the aorta do?
Carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the body.
What is the function of valves in the heart?
Prevent backflow of blood.
Where is the tricuspid valve located?
Between the right atrium and right ventricle.
it has 3 flaps to prevent backflow of blood
Where is the bicuspid valve located?
Between the left atrium and left ventricle.
it has 2 flaps to prevent backflow of blood
What are the semi-lunar valves?
Pulmonary and aortic valves that prevent backflow into the ventricles.
What is the order of blood flow through the heart?
Vena cava → Right atrium → Right ventricle → Pulmonary artery → Lungs → Pulmonary vein → Left atrium → Left ventricle → Aorta → Body
