Heat Flashcards
(43 cards)
How does heat affect a liquids volume?
When a liquid is heated, it moves quickly and increases its distance because the bond between its molecules are less than a solid. As a result, liquid has more thermal expansion compared to a solid.
When it reaches its boiling point, its attraction becomes weaker, and it turns into a gas which increases its volume even further.
How does heat affect a gases volume ?
Since they have a weak attraction, when gas is heated, their particles move farther apart. The expansion of volume of gas is more compared to a liquid in a solid. However, if they were are placed in a container with a fixed volume, it will not expand.
Does a solid expand more than a liquid when they come in contact with heat?
No a liquid expands more when it comes in contact with heat.
Does a gas expand more than a liquid when it comes in contact with heat ?
Yes, it does when it has free space to move.
When a gas is volume, receives heat and it is in a container what happens?
It builds pressure that container, and eventually the container goes kaboom.
What is matter?
Matters anything that has mass and takes of space.
Are particles of matter, always consistently moving?
Particles of matter, always consistently moving. Even particles of a solid consistently vibrate, although as low in restricted manner due to their limited spacing.
Do particles of matter have space between them?
Atoms and molecules have spaces between them. Particles of solid or tightly packed together, that they can hardly move. Meanwhile, particles of a liquid have some space between them, whereas gas particles are far apart from each other.
Do particles of matter attract each other?
Particles of matter are attracted to each other by varying degree of force called intermolecular forces of attraction.
Do particles of matter move faster when they’re heated?
If you apply heat, particles of matter, vibrate, faster, and behave differently. As the molecules heat up, they gain kinetic energy. Particles move faster and bump into each other, creating more space between them.
How is heat measured?
Joules
What is the kelvin measurement system?
Scientist, use the kelvin measurement system. It is measured by mercury based or digital thermometers.
What temperature is a room normally between?
18°C to 22°C
What is waters freezing point?
Waters freezing point is 0°C
What is what is waters boiling point?
100°C
What is the average body temperature?
37.5°C
What are three facts about solids?
Solids are rigid
Have fixed shapes
And have fixed volumes
What are three facts about liquids?
They do not have a fixed shape
They are not rigid
But they have a fixed volume
What are three facts about gases?
They are not rigid
They have no fixed shapes
They have no fixed volume
Can heat affect volume of objects?
Yes, heat affects the volume of different objects and in different ways. Thermal expansion is the increase and volume of objects when heated. Each object has a specific amount of thermal expansion, depending on whether it is a solid gas or liquid.
What happens to a solid when it’s molecules are heated?
When Asal is heated, it’s particle. Start to move quickly and become less organized. The spaces between these particles increase so it’s volume also increases solids become larger, and wider when they are heated.
Which state of matter has the least thermal expansion?
Solids have the least thermal expansion among the states of matter because of their strong intermolecular attractions
What happens when a solid reaches their melting point?
When solid reach their melting point or the temperature where solitary into a liquid, their particles move even faster and their volumes expand.
Particles of matter are consistently moving above temperatures of?
-273.15°C or 0 K which is also called absolute zero.
