Heat Flashcards
(18 cards)
Define Temperature
A measure of the hotness or coldness of a body
What is the Celsius scale used for
Everyday life, 100° is boiling and 0° is freezing
What is the Kelvin scale used for
Mostly used in scientific calculations, beginning at absolute zero (-273.15°C)
What is a thermometric property
It is a physical process that changes with temperature repeatedly and measurably
Examples of thermometric properties
Length of a column of liquid, gas pressure/volume, colour of crystals, electrical resistance
What is Heat
It is a form of energy that causes a rise in temperature when added and a fall in temperature when removed.
What is the unit for heat capacity and what is it
C, it is the amount of energy required to change the temperature of a substance by 1°K
Define specific heat capacity
The amount of energy required to change the temperature of 1Kg of a substance by 1°K
What is the unit for SHC
J/kg/K
What is Latent heat
A hidden form of energy, the energy required to change the state of a substance without a change in temperature
What is LHF
Energy required to change from a liquid to a solid or a solid to a liquid without a change in temperature
What is LHV
The energy required to change a substance from a liquid to a gas or a gas to a liquid without a change in temperature
What is SLH
The amount of energy required to change the state of 1Kg of a substance without a change in temperature, measured in J/kg
What is the formula for specific latent heat
Q = mL, Q = heat energy, m = mass, L = latent heat
What is the formula for specific heat capacity
Q = mc∆theta, c = specific heat capacity, ∆theta = change in temperature
What is conducion
The transfer of heat energy via kinetic energy from one molecule to another
What is convection
The transfer of heat energy via the circulation of a heated part of a gas or liquid
What is Radiation (Heat)
Is the transfer of heat energy as EM waves, does not require a medium
