Heat Flashcards
(13 cards)
Temperature
Is the measure of the hotness or coldness of an object
Thermometric property
Is any physical property that changes measurably with temperature
Heat capacity
Is the energy required to change a given objects temperature by 1 Kelvin
Specific heat capacity
Is the energy needed to change the temperature of 1 kg of that substance by 1 Kelvin
Latent heat
Is the energy needed to change a substances state without a change in temperature
Specific latent heat
Is the amount of energy needed to change the state of 1 kg of a substance without a change in temperature
Specific latent heat of fusion
Is the amount of energy needed to change 1 kg of a substance from a solid to a liquid without a change in temperature (i.e at it’s melting point)
Specific latent heat of vaporisation
Is the amount of energy needed to change 1 kg of a substance from a liquid to a gas without a change in temperature (i.e at it’s boiling point)
Conduction
Is the movement of heat energy through a substance by the passing on of molecular vibration from molecule to molecule with no overall motion of the substance
U-Value
Is the amount of heat energy conducted per second through 1m² of a structure when a temperature difference of 1° is maintained between it’s ends
Radiation
Is the transfer of heat energy from one place to another if the form of electromagnetic waves without the need for a medium
Solar constant
Is the average amount of the sun’s energy falling per second perpendicularly on 1m² of the Earth’s atmosphere.
It’s value is about 1.35kWm–².
It is an intensity.
Convection
Is the transfer of heat through a fluid by means of circulating currents of fluid caused by the heat.
