Heat Flashcards
(36 cards)
Solids , liquids and gases expand
When heated
Solids , liquids and gases crontract
When cooled
What is the unit of energy
The unit of energy is the Joule
Heat is a form of energy
Heat moves mountain lava
Bimetallic strip
The bimetallic strip shows that not all metals expand at the same rate , change e.g. Thermostats in heating or an iron
Water
Water begins to expand when cooled below 4 degrees celsius
Conduction
Heat travels from particle to particle along a substance , normally a solid
Convection
Heatvtravels through a fluid (liquid or gas ) when the particles move and carry the heat
Radiation
Wheat travels from a hot object without the need for a medium , does not need a solid , liquid or gas to go through , will flow through a vacuum
Conduction
Conduction is the method by which heat travels from particle to particle through a solid
Conductor
A conductor is something that allows energy e.g heat to flow through it , e.g metal is a good conductor
Insulator
Insulator is a substance that doesn’t allow heat to flow through it easily e.g plastic
Air
Air is a good insulator , keeps animals warm , is trapped by the fur and helps to insulate the animal
Layers
The hairs on our arms are not very good at keeping us warm , if we wear layers of clothes , air is trapped to keep us warm
Radiation
All heat object radiate heat . The hotter the object the more heat it radiates
Tempature
A measure how hot an object is
Temperature is measured
With a thermometer
Mercury and alcohol thermometer
We deal with two types of themometers
The liquid in the thermometer will…
Expand and rise when heated and will contract and fall when cooled
Melting point
Melting point is when a solid turns to a liquid
Boiling point
Boiling point is when a liquid turns to a gas
Freezing point
Freezing point is when a liquid turns to a solid
Condensation
Condensation is a gas turning to a liquid
Latent heat
The heat taken in or given out when a substance is changing state without a change in temperature
