Heat Flashcards
(35 cards)
Heat
Form of energy
The unit
Is the Jewel
Solids liquids and gases expand
When heated
Solids liquids and gases contract
When cooled
Bimetallic strip
The different metals will expand and contract at different rates due to their different molecular properties
Water
Water begins to expand when cooled below 4 degrees Celsius
Conduction
Heat travels from particle to particle along a substance , normally a solid
Convection
Heat travels through a fluid ( liquid or a gas) when particles move and carry the heat
Radiation
Heat travels from a hot object without the need for a medium, does not need a solid ,liquid or gas to go through , will flow through a vacuum
Conductor
Something that allows energy e.g heat to flow through it .e.g metal is a good conductor
Insulation
Is a substance that doesn’t allow heat to flow through it easily e.g plastic
Heat is a form of
Energy that is measured in joules
Materials expand
When heated and contract when cooled
Above 4*water
Behaves like other liquids
Below 4• water
Behaves oppositely to other liquids
Reducing pressure
Lowers the boiling point of water above 100•
Temperature is a measure
Of the hotness of the body
When heat causes a change
I’m state and not in temperature we call it latent
When heat changes a solid
Without temperature we call it latent of heat and fusion
When heat changes a liquid
To gas without change in temperature we call it vaporisation
Heat can travel in 3 methods :
Conduction convention and radiation
Insulators are
Materials that are poor conductors
Radiation
Is the transfer of the heat from a hot object without the need of a medium.the sun transfers its energy through radiation
Temperature
A measure of how hot the object is
