Heat and cooling Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is Temperature?
Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is.
What is Degrees Celsius (°C)?
It’s a unit of measure.
What is convection?
This is the transfer of heat energy through the movement of the particles themselves.
What is conduction?
Is one of the ways in which thermal energy is transformed.
What is convection current?
Is a circular movement of hot gas or liquid , rising and cool gas or liquid falling.
What is evaporation?
The water evaporate because water particles have sufficient energy, are able to escape from the surface of the liquid.
Why does solid expands?
It expands because the particles vibrate more and take up more space.
What is contraction?
When a material gets smaller.
How does a solid gets smaller?
It gets smaller when it is cooled.
What is Infrared Radiation?
Carries thermal energy from a hotter object to a cooler object.
What is Radiation?
The transfer of thermal energy without particles.is like light
hot not cold
cold is the absence of thermal energy.
when the water boils…
it makes a circle (up and down)
in convection….
the particles move, transferring the thermal energy.
what are the change on state?
are melting, boiling and condensing and freezing.(liguids, solids, gases)
evaporation
water boils and it transforms in gas.
which one will cool down faster the large or the small one?
the large one will cool down faster .
What particles can’t do?
The particles cannot move from place to place
They cannot be compressed or squashed
The particles are close together and have nowhere to move into
why the temperature of thermometer rises?
Because the liquid inside expands and it go up .
Heating increases pressure
If a gas is heated up it starts to move around more quickly.
