HEAT, THERMAL ENERGY AND TEMPERATURE Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is Thermal Energy?
The TOTAL amount of KE and PE in a object
What is temperature?
The AVERAGE amount of KE and PE in a object
What is a thermometer?
A object used to measure tempt.
If enough heat is transferred to water what will happen?
A change in state (liquid to gas)
If you have a 10 once milkshake and a 8 once what can you say abouts its thermal energy?
The 8 once would start to melt quicker because it has less particles to heat up.
Name two things that can determine a objects thermal energy
It’s mass and the tempt it started with
What has more thermal energy a teapot or a teacup and why?
The teapot because it has more particles
If you added thermal energy to a liquid what would happen to the particles?
They move faster
If you take ice cubes out of the fridge what will happen?
The particles move faster, they gain thermal energy, change in state (liquid to solid)
If thermal energy is added to ice sticks but the tempt stays the same what will happen?
You transfer heat and as you do that you gain thermal energy, change state, but the temp stays the same.
In what direction is heat transferred?
Hot to Cold
What is absolute 0 kalvin?
The lowest kalvin can go and there is no more particle movement. 0k = 273 degrees Celsius
What is heat?
The energy that is transferred from a warmer obj to a cooler obj
