Heat Tranfer Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are the different types of energy
- kinetic
- sound
- thermal
- light
- potential gravitational, elastic, chemical
- electrical
- nuclear
What are the laws of conservation of energy?
- Energy can be moved and energy can change its form, but energy cannot be created or destroyed (this also means that the amount of energy in the universe is always the same)
- Energy can be moved and energy can be transformed, but each time this occurs, some energy is always lost (usually as heat, but not always)
Where does heat always move to?
What does everything always heat up or cool down to?
Warmer place to a cooler place.
Room temperature.
What are the three methods of heat transfer?
Radiation
Convection
Conduction
What is elastic potential energy?
energy stored in elastic materials, such as springs, as the result of stretching or compressing
What is gravitational potential energy?
Height above the ground, the higher and heavier an object is the more energy it will have
What is chemical potential energy?
energy stored in chemicals, e.g. in food, fuel and explosives
energy that is stored in atoms and the bonds between them
What is electrical energy?
energy associated with electric charge, either stationary or moving
What is radiation?
the emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves through space or through a material
What is sound energy?
vibrations passing through solids, liquids and gases
Describe convection.
When hotter, non dense material rise, and cooler dense material sink from gravity thus creating heat transfer.
Describe radiant/light energy.
Radiant energy comes from objects releasing light and heat at a distance.
What is kinetic energy?
The energy of motion.
Describe conduction
The transfer of energy of heat or electric form, by direct contact.
Thermal energy?
Heat energy
Transformation of energy
When one one energy turns into another; when one type of energy is lost through other energy/ies
Transferring of energy
When one type of energy is passed on to another object.
