Heat transfer Flashcards
(10 cards)
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed just transformed (under normal conditions)
Heat
Thermal energy that flows due to a difference in temperature Heat flows from hot to cold
Heat transfer
A method by which heat flows (conduction, convection, radiation)
Conduction
Heat transfer within or between solid objects.
Convection
Heat transfer into or out fluids
Radiation
Heat transfer due to packets of energy called photons that can travel through many substances, even empty space.
Insulator
A material through which energy (electrical, thermal, or sound) cannot be easily transformed.
Conductor
A material through which energy (electrical, thermal, or sound) can be easily transformed.
Temperature
The measure of the average speed of all particales.
Thermal Energy
The total energy of all particles in an object.
