When did Britain become a member of the EEC ?
1st January 1973
- Heath had a comfortable majority in Parliament including 69 Labour MPs voting in favour of joining
What did Heath believe the ESC membership would provide ?
Provide British industry with better access to Europes markets with European competitions helping to stimulate modernisation and development
Who did Britian join the EEC under ?
Not under De Gaulle but new French President George Pompidou who didn’t oppose British entry but he wanted there to be terms to entry
What were Pompidou demands for entry ?
His demands angered many eurosceptics
- Britain had to sacrifice preferential trade deals with the commonwealth
- accept the EECs policy of heavily subsiding French farmers
What was the impact of membership?
Had little impact on economic performance and was controversial amongst eurosceptic cabinet members
