Hemispheric Lateralisation Flashcards
(9 cards)
What does contralateral mean
Left hemisphere controls the right side of the body and vise versa
What does the corpus collosum do
. Connects 2 parts of brain together
. Cut to help people with epilepsy
What was Sperry and Gazzaniga aim
Examine the extent to which the 2 hemispheres are specialised for certain functions
(When info presented to 1 hemisphere in split-brain patient, info isn’t transferred to other hemisphere)
Method of Sperry and Gazzaniga research
. An image/word projected to patients left visual field (processed by right) or vise versa
What were the factors within Sperry and Gazzaniga experiment
Describe = pic presented to either left/right visual field and participant had to describe what they see
Tactile = object placed in participants hand and had to describe what they see and select similar object from alternate objects
Drawing = presented with pic in left or right visual field and had to draw what they see
Results (Describe)
Left = could describe what they saw - superiority in language production
Right = could not describe what was shown
Results (Tactile)
Left = verbally describe what they felt. Could identify object in right hand by selecting similar object
Right = couldn’t describe object - could identify object in left hand by seeking similar objects
Results (Drawing)
Left = picture from right-hand not as clear as left hand
Right = Would attempt to draw pic but not as clear
Research Evaluation
. High internal validity
. High reliability
. Demand Characteristics
. Felt abnormal
. Low ecological validity
