What is the break with Rome?
Henry the eighth is famous for the break with Rome in the 1530’s. He took England out of the Catholic Church and made the church of England.
Why did Henry decide to break with Rome?
Power: Henry wanted full control over his kingdom. He didn’t want people to like the Pope to interfere with peoples marriages or appointments of archbishops.
Money: he was going bankrupt and he spent his money on wars and his lavish lifestyle. The church was very rich and collected taxes. Some churches owned a quarter of England and Henry wanted it for himself.
Succession: Henry had one daughter he wanted to marry away. Mary I. To do so he also needed to divorce his wife Catherine at the time. This meant breaking away from Rome.
