Wolsey’s fall: Foreign Policy

A

Foreign Policy:

  • 1525- Charles rejected Henry’s proposal of a joint attack on northern France+ repudiated Marriage to Mary- Wolsey’s domestic prestige doesn’t recover
  • 1525 Wolsey+ the League of Cognac enraged most at court especially Norfolk+ Suffolk
  • Many opposed Wolsey’s foreign policy by 1529 diplomatically isolated
  • Shift to pro French policy 1527 did nothing for his popularity nor did it improve the countries security as France and HRE made a peace treaty following French defeat at Landriano
  • Embarrassing reversal of policy when Wolsey lifts the embargo with burgundy

Wolsey’s fall: Unpopular in Court

A
  • Humble beginnings in conjunction with his endowment of colleges, apparently for his own cause, did little to make allies at court.
  • Anne Boleyn and Norfolk made it a personal ambition to get rid of Wolsey
  • Many at court opposed Wolsey’s foreign policy reversal
  • Failure of subsidy 1523 and then Amicable grant 1525
  • All of Wolsey’s enemies, Rochford, Norfolk and Suffolk had access to the King at court in Greenwich while Wolsey resided in the law courts at westminister

  • Henry assumed the annulment would be swift and easy, as it became more difficult and Wolsey had less influence over the Pope it became clear Wolsey would be unable to achieve it
