  • Hepatovirus; related to picornavirus
  • Fecal-oral transmission (contaminated food or water)
  • incubation pd= 2-6 wks
  • NEVER causes chronic liver dz!!
  • Dx: detection of serum IgM Abs

  • Parenteral, sexual contact, perinatal
  • incubation pd: 2-26 wks (mean 8 wks)
  • 5-10% have/progress to chronic liver disease
  • Dx: detection of HBs Ag or Ab to HBc Ag; PCR for HBV DNA

  • 10%=chronic liver dz for confection and 90-100% for superinfection
