Herd Immunity Flashcards
(10 cards)
Herd Immunity
when a sufficiently high proportion of the population is immune to a disease that the disease is unable to spread
Herd Immunity Threshold
Minimum proportion of a population that must be immune to achieve herd immunity
Herd effect
A reduced effect of infection among susceptible indv. Due to the indirect protection conferred by the presence and proximity of immune indv. In a population
R number
- R >1: the disease will continue spreading = Epidemic
- When R =1: the disease remains steady = Endemic
- When R <1: The disease will DIE out
What is an live-attenuated vaccine
Vaccine containing weaken viruses/bacteria
What is an inactivated vaccine?
vaccine containing killed grown viruses/bacterium using heat/chemical
Live-attenuated vaccine examples
MMR, Rotavirus, Yellow fever, Influenza nasal spray
Live-attenuated vaccine contraindications
Not to be used in immunosuppressant patients
Herd Immunity equation
p > 1 - (1/R0)
