Heredity Flashcards
(15 cards)
Heredity
the passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another.
Dominant Trait
The big letter allele (that will show up even if there is only one)
Recessive Trait
the small letter allele (that wont show up unless there is two)
Genes
a unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring
Alleles
letters
Phenotype
a fraction or percent of how many there is (example-3/4 are brown eyes 1/4 is blue eyes)
Genotype
two letters that make up what your traits are gonna be (example- 1/4=TT, 2/4=Tt, 1/4 = tt)
Probability
the likelihood of something happening or being the case.
Homologous chromosomes
A pair of matching chromosomes in an organism, with one being inherited from each parent.
Meiosis
a type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell
Sex chromosomes
a chromosome, differing in shape or function from other chromosomes, that determines the gender of an individual.
DNA
the set of non-genetic traits, qualities, or features that characterize a person or thing:
Nucleotide
any of a group of molecules that, when linked together, form the building blocks of DNA or RNA
RNA
ribonucleic acid, a nucleic acid present in all living cells. Its principal role is to act as a messenger carrying instructions from DNA for controlling the blend/synthesis of proteins.
Mutations
a sudden departure from the parent type in one or more heritable characteristics, caused by a change in a gene or a chromosome.
