What is another name for the herpes zoster virus?
Varicella zoster virus
Why does shingles only affect one dermatome of the body?
Virus usually only affects 1 nerve root
What is the mechanim of transmission for chickenpox from someone has shingles?
Direct contact/droplet spread from shingle lesions
What may cause shingles (ie a flare up)?
- Ageing (most patients are over 50 years old)
- Immunosuppressive illness
- Psychological trauma
- Physical trauma
What are the 3 phases of shingles?
- Pre-eruptive
- Eruptive
- Chronic
How is shingles diagnosed?
Clinical- observe type of lesion
Direct immunofluorescence assay
How should shingles be managed?
Clean and dry- avoid secondary bacterial infection
(Sometimes antivirals eg: Oral aciclovir
–> especially if over 50/immunocompromised)
What are the complications of shingles?
Scarring
Bell’s palsy
What’s the prognosis for shingles?
Good for younger/otherwise healthy patients
Can be serious if pregnant/immunocompromised
Is there a varicella zoster vaccine (for shingles)?
Yes
