Hip Flashcards
(11 cards)
Subjective questions for the hip
Ages/eases = squatting, walking, side lying
Locking/catchimg
Crepitus = grating, cracking, clicking (roughening of cartilage)
Neurological symptoms
Lumbar symptoms
General Red flag questions for the hip
Cancer = weight loss, unremitting pain, night pain, history
Infection = fever, redness, heat, swelling
Stress fractures = underweight, eating disorders
DVT
trauma fractures
Hip specific red flag questions
Lumps/bumps in groin
Testicular swelling
Routine objective assessment
Observation
AROM
PROM
muscle tests = strength & length
Palpating
Accessory movement
Special tests
Functional tests
What 6 with are you observing about the hip
Posture = asymmetry & even weight bearing
Muscle bulk = atrophy or hypertrophy
Swelling
Colour
Gait
Maladaptive patterns
What are you looking for in AROM
Rang = normal? Compare to other side
Quality = willingness to move
Pain response = when & where. Better or worse after repeating movement
Occurrence of muscle spasm
What 2 categories does AROM test
Mechanical/structural = contractile tissues (muscles & tendons), inert tissues (joints, ligament & capsule), stretches & pulls, load transfer/acceptance
BioPsychoSocial = willingness to move, pain behaviour, avoidance, reluctance & fear
What does PROM test
Inert tissues & contractile at end of range
What are you looking for in PROM
Range available
Pain reproduction & resistance = where?
Pattern of movement limitation = capsular? Specific movement
End feel
Name 2 muscle length tests for the hip
Modified Thomas test = tests hip flexor tightness
Overs test = length of iliotibial band & glute med & min
What test indicates weak hip abductors if positive
