Hip joint (articulations, muscle actions, and structures) Flashcards
(25 cards)
Orientation of the acetabulum
- Laterally
- Inferiorly
- Anteriorly
Osteokinematic motions of the hip
- Flexion
- Extension
- Abduction
- Adduction
- Medial rotation
- Lateral rotation
Loose packed position of the hip
- 30 degrees flexion
- 30 degrees abduction
- Slight ER
Close packed position of the hip
- Full extension
- IR
Capsular pattern of the hip
Flexion –> abduction –> medial rotation
*sometimes IR is most limited
Muscles that contribute to hip flexion
- Iliopsoas
- Sartorius
- Rectus femoris
- Pectineus
Muscles that contribute to hip extension
- Gluteus max
- Gluteus medius
- Semitendinosus
- Semimenbranosus
- Biceps femoris
Muscles that contribute to hip abduction
- Gluteus medius
- Gluteus minimus
- Piriformis
- Obturator internus
- Tensor fasciae latae
Muscles that contribute to hip adduction
- Adductor magnus
- Adductor longus
- adductor brevis
- Gracilis
Muscles that contribute to hip IR
- Tensor fasciae latae
- Gluteus medius
- Gluteus minimus
- Pectineus
- Adductor longus
Muscles that contribute to hip ER
- Gluteus maximus
- Obturator externus
- Obturator internus
- Piriformis
- Gemelli
- Sartorius
Function of the acetabular labrum
Enhance the depth of the acetabulum
What are the attachment points of the articular capsule?
- Rim of the acetabulum
- Neck of the femur
Ligaments that reinforce the hip capsule
- Iliofemoral
- Pubofemoral
- Ischiofemoral
What are the main bursae of the hip region?
- Iliopsoas
- Trochanteric
- Ischiogluteal
Iliopsoas bursae
B/t the anterior joint capsule and iliopsoas tendon
Trochanteric bursae
- Multiple trochanteric bursae
- All are b/t the greater trochanter and gluteal muscles
Ischiogluteal bursa
B/t the ischium and gluteus maximus
What structures form the femoral triangle?
- Inguinal ligament
- Sartorius
- Adductor longus
What is contained in the femoral triangle?
- Femoral artery (can be palpated)
- Lymph glands (can be palpated)
- Femoral nerve
- Femoral vein
Iliofemoral ligament
- Strongest in the body
- Prevents excessive hip extension
- Helps maintain upright posture
- From AIIS to intertrochanteric line of the femur
Ischiofemoral ligament
- Weakest of the 3 hip ligaments
- Reinforces the capsule
- From ischial wall of the acetabulum to neck of the femur
Ligamentum teres
- Physical attachment b/t head of the femur and inferior rim of the acetabulum
- Provides minimal stability
What runs in parallel to the ligamentum teres?
Blood vessels and nerves
