What is Hip-Hop?
Originated in Bronx, New York City around 1970’s. Hip-hop culture is from the African-American group of people who were looking for creative outlet to vent their frustrations and disappointments with society.
How did Hip-Hop develop?
It started with funky beats reverberating at house or basement parties and the streets of New York, developing as a cultural and artistic phenomenon affecting the youth worldwide.
Who invented the term Hip-Hop?
The word Hip-hop was apparently invented by a New York rapper, Afrika Bambaataa (real name is Kevin Donovan), who was dubbed as the Grandfather of Hip-hop.
When did Hip-Hop culture emerge in the Philippines?
The hip-hop culture in the Philippines emerged in the 1980s as a result of the large influx of American musical styles.
What is Rapping (MCing)?
Vocal element. Rap music is the heart of the hip-hop musical genre.
What is Disc Jockeying (Djing)?
Means scratching or turn-table record mixing.
What is Break dancing (Bboying)?
It started as a form of fighting, a mixture of physically demanding movements which exploited the power of the performers, and stylized punching and kicking movements.
What is Graffiti Art?
Also known as aerosol art.
What is Street Dance?
The word street dance arrived in the Philippines from the United States during the 1980s but gained popularity during the 1990s.
How is Street Dance different from Hip-Hop Dance?
Street dance is a cultural variation of hip-hop dance in the United States, focusing on entertainment rather than the cultural symbolism of African-American hip-hop.
What is Bounce or Recoil in Street Dance?
A quick contraction or retraction, or vice versa movement with energy and vitality.
What does Tightening of the Body mean in Street Dance?
The body is controlled with firmness and strength to prepare it for explosive and sudden movements.
What is Agility and Coordination in Street Dance?
The ability to move quickly and smoothly from one position to the other with ease.
Why is Fun an essential element of Hip-Hop?
Fun offers dancers a mechanism to express kinetic musicality with a bravado that is easily consumed by an immobile audience.
What is Breaking?
Also known as break dancing, it is an unstructured and highly improvisational style that incorporates gymnastics and acrobatic movement.
What is Popping?
A quick contraction and relaxation of muscles producing jerking of various joints.
What is Locking?
It relies on fast, distinct arm and hand movements combined with relaxed hips and legs where the lock is the basic move used.
What is Krumping?
Characterized by unrestrained, rapid-fire, and highly energetic moves of the limbs and torso.
What is House Dance?
A dance style that emphasizes fast, complex footsteps with fluid movements of the torso.
What is Street Jazz?
A combination of hip-hop dance style and jazz dance movements.
What is Waacking?
A dance style created in dance clubs on the west coast of the USA in the 1970s, characterized by a focus on arm movements and fast-moving style.
What is Vogue?
A highly stylized, modern house dance originating in the late 1980s that evolved out of the Harlem ballroom scene of the 1960s.
What is Tutting?
A hip hop dance style that emphasizes the body’s ability to create geometric shapes and movements, predominantly with the use of 90 degree angles.
