I think my greatest achievement was transforming a small business to global leading video game company
What do you think makes a game. successful?
A successful game needs to have simplicity and originality, but also unique enough to captivate players.
How did you manage to keep Nintendo relevant over the years?
I tried to focus on innovation and bold risks, and not to chase trends, but choose our own path.
What do you think is the most important lesson you’ve learned in business?
The most important lesson has got to be to take risks. If you choose the simple path, you will be predictable and fall behind.
What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs today?
I would say to trust your vision, and don’t be afraid of risks. Focus on uniqueness and quality.
How did you decide which games to develop or publish?
I looked for games that had potential and would be unique for the market.
What inspired you to join Nintendo in the first place?
I joined because I saw potential beyond playing cards and I saw that it had a strong foundation I could build on.
How did you feel when you first became president of Nintendo?
When I became president I felt a heavy responsibility, but also excitement.
What was your vision for Nintendo’s future when you started?
My vision was to make Nintendo a world leading entertainment company, making not just games, but products that would appeal to people.
If you could go back, would you change anything?
I wouldn’t have changed much, even the risky decisions. I might have pushed to expand globally earlier. But I am proud of what I have achieved
If you could what would you have said to your successor?
I would have said “To never forget the power of innovation and prioritize creativity and quality over profits.
What are you most proud of completing.
I am most proud of the Nintendo Entertainment System, as it brought games into homes worldwide.
Did you think that the company would become so successful?
No, I didn’t think that it would reach the level it did.
Did you have a favourite character from any of the Nintendo games?
I always had a fondness for Mario.
Did you think about retiring before you did?
I did think about it, but I always thought that there was more to do.
Was the success of the Game Boy a surprise to you?
It wasn’t much of a surprise, considering the cost and games.
Did you ever consider expanding Nintendo into other types of entertainment beyond video games?
Yes, we have tried to make theme parks, movies and merchandise.
Was your decision to focus on family-friendly games influenced by market research?
Yes, it was influenced by the market.
Do you think that the gaming industry has changed for the better since your time at Nintendo?
I think it has improved and advanced.
Were there moments when you doubted your decisions as president of Nintendo?
Yes, I do experience some doubts, especially when taking risks.
