Histology Flashcards
(34 cards)
which heart wall layer contains purkinje fibers?
endocardium
how do purkinje fibers stain compared to cardiac muscle fibers?
larger, larger nuclei, stain pale
what defines a portal system? what are the two portal systems?
when a vein or arteriole is interposed bw two capillary networks
hepatic
hypothalamic-hypophyseal
what is the tunica intima composed of?
endothelium, basement membrane, subendothelial layer with CT and an internal elastic lamina
What is the tunica media composed of?
circularly arranged layers of smooth muscle cells, elastic and collagen fibers, and sometimes an external elastic membrane
what is the tunica adventitia composed of?
CT, with vasa vasorum and nervi vasorum
what parts of the vessel does the vasa vasorum supply?
the tunica adventitia and media (intima is supplied by the vessel)
what is the function of the nervi vascularis (nervi vasorum)?
contraction and relaxation of smooth muscles in the media
what are general features of endothelial cells?
homeostasis maintain selective permeability maintain nonthrombogenic barrier modulate BF and vascular resistance hormonal synthesis modification of lipoproteins by oxidation
what are general features of smooth muscle cells?
maintain BP
produce elastin, reticular fibers, and proteoglycans
what are large arteries AKA? example? features?
elastic arteries
aorta
media thicker than adventitia
many fenestrated sheets of elastic lamellae in media
collagen fibers in media and adventitia (prevents excessive distention of the large arteries)
what are medium arteries AKA? features?
muscular arteries
more smooth muscle in media
prominent internal elastic lamina
thin subendothelial layer
little elastic material
how many layers of smooth muscle in arterioles?
1-5
how to distinguish small from medium arteries?
count the layers of smooth muscle nuclei (arterioles have < 5 ; medium arteries have >5)
structure of capillary?
single layer of endothelium and basal lamina
3 types of capillaries?
continuous, fenestrated, discontinuous
where are continuous capillaries found?
muscle lung CNS
what kind of junctions in continuous capillaries?
occluding junctions
what are rouget cells?
pericytes that are associated with some capillaries and can give rise to endothelial and smooth muscle cells
where are fenestrated capillaries found?
endocrine glands
what are fenestrations spanned by?
thin diaphragms
what are discontinuous capillaries AKA?
sinusoids
Where are sinusoids found?
liver spleen bone marrow
features of sinusoids?
larger diameter
irregular shape
incomplete basal lamina
gaps bw endothelial cells
