The Guelfs won the dispute, but then a new division became apparent, the black Guelfs and White Guelfs. The Black supported Papal Power of Pope Boniface, and the White supported more freedom from Rome.
The whites won at first, but then the Pope stepped in crushing the whites and destroying much of Florence.
Dante Asa white Guelf was fined and exiled for two years. Having no money, since it was confiscated in Florence, and not believing himself guilty, he did not pay the fine. He was thus exiled from Florence.
