Catherine Beecher

Identified the 6 subject areas of FCS: Food and Nutrition, family relations and child development, family economics and management, housing, health care, clothing and textiles.
Ellen Swallow Richards
Went to vassar and MIT and studied chemistry. Opened the new England kitchen in Boston. Opened Rumsford kitchen at Chicago’s world fair. Lobbied for school lunches and hygiene polices. Introduced domestic science to Boston public schools. Held meetings at Lake Placid
Morrill Act 1862
Government provided federal funding and set aside acres of land to give to schools for agriculture and home economics. Educated farm wives in running their households as their husbands were being educated in agricultural methods and processes.
Smith-Hughes Act of 1917
Provided federal fundings for the establishment and support of vocational education and teacher training in agriculture, home economics, trades, and industry. Aimed at helping students not interested in entering a professional career. Promoted Vocational education but made it a two track system.
Vocational Act of 1963
Provided federal funds to be more inclusive of serving the poor and disabled to be successful in vocational education programs. Largest singled federal investment in h.s. history. Law was reauthorizes 4 more times - inclusive of students with disabilities, disadvantages students, and bilingual.
No Child Left Behind of 2002
Required teachers to be highly qualified, state testing, scores tied to funding, AYP: 3 year warning to increase scores then students could switch schools and failing schools had to pay

Carl D. Perkins Acts
Enacted in 1984. Two objectives: federal funding for improvement of vocational education programs (Teacher salaries, supplies, equipment), and increased access for students with special needs. Where out funding and supply money comes from. Name changed from CTE from vocational education in 2006. Emphasized academics with in disciplines. Specific skills to general skills.

Report concluded US education system was failing to meet national need for competitive work force. Focus turned to math and science in schools

Lake Placid Conferences
11 people attended first conference. Annual meetings every 10 years. Created American Home Ec. System. Total of 10 conferences. On 10th conference help teachers enroll as many teachers as possible in various related subject areas WHERE HOME ECONOMICS STANDARDS WERE DEFINED

In 1990 higher education increased enrollment in specialized areas and decreased in general program. Conversations started to determine common ground for all disciplines that make up FCS. 20 FCS professionals changed to develop philosophical framework for future , look ahead at 202o. Trends were identified and commonalities were determined called cross cutting threads. Result: Body of Knowledge
