Q

How has the tension in the strings’ bows changed?

A

The early bow meant less tension and therefore less sound. However, the decreased tension meant that music could be articulated more clearly.

Q

How have the strings changed?

A

Early violins would have gut strings and these would later be wound with metal. For our period of study we can assume gut strings were the norm. HIP strings therefore have a lighter but brighter feel. The players are able to shape each note and shorter phrases more musically.

Q

Would a string section be bigger or smaller in an HIP performance?

A

Fewer string players would be required. Modern orchestras may have more than 24 violins but an HIP may only have between 12 and 16.

Q

What is the difference in vibrato?

A

Vibrato pre 1800 was used as an ornament so HIP strings will typically be played without vibrato which makes a thinner almost glass-like sound at times

Q

How will the balance of an HIP orchestra compare?

A

a smaller, brighter sound from the string section means that an HIP will probably achieve a better balance with wind and brass compared to an early 20th century recording when the large string section with modern bows and steel strings may dominate.

Q

How would the percussion differ?

A

the timpani (or kettledrum) would be played with hard sticks and this makes f or ff sections quite dramatic and even aggressive at times.

Q

How has the wind section changed?

A

Older wind instruments have fewer metal keys and can be quite difficult to play, definitely less stable than modern instruments. The instruments then sound leaner, less even in tone and smoothness than today more modern instruments. the upper woodwinds were made of boxwood and were a much lighter material than today’s blackwood and each had a much more delicate sound

Q

How has the brass section changed?

A

The trombone was not added to the orchestra until Beethoven’s 5th symphony. The horns could not produce the same degree of smoothness available on today’s horns. the trumpets can sound quite bright and piercing and the horns can sound a bit rougher than the modern French Horns.
