A

A

Ferdinand Magellan

A

A Portuguese nobleman. He wanted to find a way to reach the Pacific. He found a passage which was later called the Strait of Magellan. The ships emerged into Balboas South Sea which he renamed to the Latin word for peace: Pacific.

Christopher Columbus

A

He wanted to reach the east Indies so he got sponsorship from Ferdinand and Isabella. He sailed west on August 3, with three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. They found land October 12, 1492. He called the natives Indians.

Dutch East India Company

A

Formed by wealthy Dutch merchants in 1602. The Dutch has full sovereign powers which is the power to build armies, wage war, negotiate peace treaties, and govern oversees territory. The Dutch East India company came to dominate the region.

Taino

A

The people that Columbus encountered. They lived in villages and grew corn, yams, and cotton. The were assaulted by Columbus and some were seized and taken back to the Spanish king so he could claim the land for Spain. The Spanish killed any Taino’s that dared to resist.

The Spanish conquers. They arrived in the America’s and settled on the Islands of Hispaniola.

A conquistador who was a land owner in Cuba. In 1519 he landed on the coast of Mexico with 600 men, 16 horses and a few cannons.

A

A Spaniard who heard rumors of a fabulously rich empire in Peru with even more gold than the Aztecs. He arrived in Peru in 1532 and Pizarro defeated the Incas. The Incas has just fought a civil war so they were weak.

A

In 1756 the French and Indian war was linked to the 7 years war in Europe. That soon spread to India and other parts of the globe.

Treaty of Paris (1763)

A

Officially ended the world wide war and ensures British dominance in North America. France ceded all of Canada and its land east of the Mississippi to Britain. And that handed Louisiana territory over to Spain.

An 11 year old boy who was seized from his Nigerian village by slave traders. He was shipped as human cargo to the Americas. He wrote about the experience later in his autobiography.

A

A part of the Triangular trade. The slaves were transported to the Americas. This is the 2nd leg of the triangular trade. There the enslaved Africans were exchanged for sugar, molasses and other products manufactured at plantations.
