Person who makes maps
Prince Henry
Portuguese prince and a patron of the explorers. He sponsored voyages to the west African coast. He raised money for expeditions and established a base for explorers in Sagres.
Bartholomeu Dias
A Portuguese nobleman and explorer. He sailed around the southernmost tip of Africa in 1488, the first European to do so. This set up the route from Europe to Asia.
Treaty of Tordesillas
A divide in the non European world into two zones. It was between Spain and Portugal.
Northwest Passages
A route from the Atlantic Ocean to the pacific through the arctic islands.
Ferdinand Magellan
A Portuguese nobleman. He wanted to find a way to reach the Pacific. He found a passage which was later called the Strait of Magellan. The ships emerged into Balboas South Sea which he renamed to the Latin word for peace: Pacific.

Christopher Columbus
He wanted to reach the east Indies so he got sponsorship from Ferdinand and Isabella. He sailed west on August 3, with three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. They found land October 12, 1492. He called the natives Indians.
Vasco da Gama
A Portuguese navigator. He led four ships around the Cape of Good Hope. He went further to the Port of Calicut on the west coast of India.
Afonso de Albuquerque
He was the commander of Portugal and he established the Mughal empire throughout much of India.
Dutch East India Company
Formed by wealthy Dutch merchants in 1602. The Dutch has full sovereign powers which is the power to build armies, wage war, negotiate peace treaties, and govern oversees territory. The Dutch East India company came to dominate the region.

Matteo Ricci
A Jesuit priest who is a European scholar. He learned to speak Chinese and adopted Chinese clothing. He wanted to convert upper class Chinese to Christianity.
