Portuguese and Spanish traders transported West African civilians to American colonies that they conquered.

British sailors became involved in the 16th century and their involvement increased in the 18th century.
Why did Britain get involved with the slave trade in the 18th century?
The treaty of Utrecht gave them the legal right to sell slaves to the Spanish Empire
