What was the schlieffen plan?
The schlieffen plan was the idea to flank the french army through belgium, knocking France out of the war
What are convection currents?
Convection currents are in the mantle and move the plate.
What gives convection currents heat?
Radiactive decay in the earths core heats up the mantle
What is the epicentre
The point directly above the focus of the earthquake
What is the focus
The point on the earths surface directly below the epicentre, and the point where the earthquake strikes
What is a fault line
A line on the earths surface that traces a geological fault
What are primary waves
Arrive first and fast, pushes and pulls, moves at 8km per second
Secondary waves
Slower, up and down motion, move an about 4km per second
What are surface / low waves:
Arrive 20-30 seonds after primary and secondary waves, rolling motion, side to side. Causing most damage due to rolling motion
What are Surface waves / rayleigh waves
Only travel through the surface of the crust, fastest waves and move up and down
Why was the earthquake in haiti so destructive
- The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0
- The depth was only about 8-10km deep
- The location was only 15km away from southwest of the capital city
- Happened at the most active time, when people were moving and getting to work
What is high silica lava
1.gas bubbles dont escape
2. Very viscous magma
3. Very explosive / violent erriptions
